The sight of this camera had me doubting that the features inside would be of a high standard, because this is one very slim camera (less than 2 centimetres), it’s amazing to think where they can put it all. Sony say that the main element to this touch screen video camera is that it is resistant to the elements by being water, dust, pressure, shock and cold proof. That’s a lot of proof, and Sony have pulled it off without making the camera looking like an armoured vehicle, which is commendable.

I’ve tried it under water with no issues, and in researching the camera before buying (some folks have some interesting stuff on you tube!), I found no issues with the other areas of proofing, so this really is one rugged little beast.

Onto the picture taking, and there is a generous 25 mm wide angle lens so you don’t have to take too many steps backwards. The slim nature of the model limits its zoom capacity to 4 times, so no surprise there. The pictures are very crisp indeed, and there are a number of functions and options that would appeal to the very serious photographer I would imagine.

It can for instance, take up to ten shots per second, and there is a very funky ability to ‘background defocus’ which gives a clear focus on the subject, but smoothes or fudges the background for a very professional look indeed. This, plus 16.2 megapixel resolution, plus many other in-shot features raise this waterproof camera above the average point and shoot. This Sony Cybershot also takes 3D shots though you’ll need a 3D screen to view them.

There is a full HD recording function on board too. The footage is impressive to say the least, for a portable camera, with the ability to zoom and take photo’s during filming. The touch screen worked perfectly, responding instantly to touch, which is impressive considering this is an outdoor/bombproof model! The menu is intuitive, clear and easily adapted to. This was my first time using a Sony waterproof HD camera and I had no problems adapting to the menus.

In-built in this camera are, as in other Sony’s, pre set modes(16) which are quickly set up and easily used, including a 235 degree wide panorama shot.

So any flaws? Well no really. Ok it’s a little slow to start up, but not very, so it’s not a biggie, and I’d prefer to have an external battery. But at this price, this camera offers superb quality, both as a camera and (an underwater) video recorder. It is extremely portable due to its frankly tiny size, and is packed full of features. Great value for money then, great camera full stop.
